The Piazza del Popolo is a large oval square in Rome. The north side of the square is dominated by the Porta del Popolo, which leads to the Via Flaminia. Since the Via Flaminia (built in AD 220) connected Rome with the Adriatic coast, many travelers entered Rome via the square.
